More than 1,400 citizens from three dozen African countries are fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, Kyiv's foreign minister said on Friday.

Ukrainian authorities have identified at least 1,436 African nationals from 36 countries fighting alongside Russian forces in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Kyiv's foreign minister stated that many of these recruits are enticed by contracts and are often sent into high-risk combat situations, with a significant number reportedly killed quickly.

Officials in South Africa and Kenya are investigating cases of their citizens becoming involved, with some sending distress calls or being detained in Russian military camps. Ukrainian officials are urging African governments to warn their citizens about the dangers of joining the conflict, and believe the actual number of foreign recruits may be higher.

More than 1,400 African nationals from dozens of countries have joined Russian forces in their war against Ukraine, Kyiv's foreign minister said on Friday. Andrei Sebeha said Moscow is enticing Africans to sign contracts that he described as equivalent to a death sentence. Most of the recruits, he said, are immediately sent to what he called meat assaults, where they're quickly killed. Ukrainian officials say Russia is trying to bolster its army by recruiting foreign fighters and urged African governments to warn their citizens of the dangers. South Africa said on Thursday it would investigate how 17 of its citizens joined mercenary forces after the men sent distress calls for help to return home. Last month, Kenya said that some of its citizens had been detained in military camps across Russia after unknowingly getting caught up in the conflict. Kyiv has identified 1,436 African nationals from 36 countries, but Sebeha said the total number of Russian recruits could be higher.
