Tech industry insiders say many people were stunned after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was fired by the board of directors on Friday. Though the board said he was let go because he had been dishonest, no other information has been released. It's possible the research side and the product side didn't agree, for instance, looking at the cast of characters who's involved. But really, I don't know what could have led to this kind of a radical reaction. And clearly, it shook everyone. Sam Altman participated in the APEC summit held in San Francisco last week, talking about AI and chat GPT. He founded OpenAI as a nonprofit in 2015, and since then, Microsoft has invested billions of dollars into the company. Altman also received a swell of support on social media, and some analysts believe he may be reinstated as CEO. There's talk about him potentially getting the job back. But there are rules that each side has, of course, in kind of mending this relationship. Right. And according to reporting, one of those things would be that the board needs to change. Board chairman and co-founder Greg Brockman also announced he's stepping down, but staying with the company. Scher says competing companies may also see the shakeup as their chance to become the leader in AI technology. In a lot of ways, just like people kind of believed in Steve Jobs over at Apple, people believe in Sam Altman. And I don't know what that means for the future of OpenAI if he's not there. Now, OpenAI's board released a statement tonight saying that they stand by their decision to remove Sam Altman as CEO.
