A girl has died and a dozen more children injured after a school bus carrying 28 students rolled over on Hamilton Highway north-west of Geelong.

A school bus carrying 28 students from Christian College Geelong was involved in a rollover on the outskirts of Geelong, resulting in the death of one girl and injuries to multiple students. Emergency services, including rescue helicopters and paramedic vehicles, responded to the scene, with several students transported to hospital for treatment and observation. 

The bus, which was carrying students from year 7 to year 12, crashed while turning onto the Hamilton Highway. Police are investigating whether speed or seatbelt use were factors in the incident. The 76-year-old bus driver was also injured and is assisting with the investigation after passing a breath test. The school is providing support to affected families.

The girl was one of 28 students on the bus when it crashed, it was turning onto the Hamilton Highway. The bus failed to negotiate a left hand bend, hit against the anchor rail, causing the bus to rollover. Two rescue helicopters and six paramedic vehicles rushed to the scene, so did some parents after hearing what had happened. Obviously there were some incredibly distressed parents and quite rightly so they turned up to the scene here and the first responders as well as Ambulance Victoria looked after those. One boy was flown to the Royal Children's University Hospital in Geelong declared a Code Brown emergency response, nine students taken there by ambulance, another 14 went there on a bus for observation. Whether you're a parent, a member of the school community, a member of the broader community around here, as well as our first responders, it's a very challenging day. The bus was headed to Christian College Geelong when it crashed, it was carrying children from year 7 through to year 12. The school says it's supporting affected families and this is a profoundly distressing situation for our entire school community. Police will investigate if speed was a factor and if seatbelts were being worn. Officers say the bus definitely had them installed. The 76 year old driver of the bus was also injured and taken to hospital. He passed a breath test after the crash and is now assisting with the investigation.
