A 25-year-old staff member has died and several others hospitalised due to a gas leak at the popular Haveli restaurant at Sydney's north-west.

A fatal gas leak at a popular Indian restaurant in Riverstone, New South Wales, has claimed the life of a 25-year-old cleaner. Emergency services responded after two colleagues raised the alarm, but despite efforts by five police officers, the man could not be saved. The officers, who risked their own safety to perform CPR, were among those hospitalised along with the two colleagues. Authorities identified extremely high levels of carbon monoxide in the building, far exceeding safe workplace limits. Specialist crews have stopped the leak, but the cause remains undetermined. All five police officers have since been discharged from hospital after experiencing symptoms related to gas inhalation.

A huge emergency response sparked by an invisible threat. We are dealing with a tragedy here. A young 25-year-old male has lost his life. He was a cleaner at the popular Riverstone Indian restaurant, knocked out from a gas leak inside just after 9am. Five police officers tried their best but he could not be saved. They put their own lives at risk going into the environment, commencing CPR, trying to save this young man's life. They were among those taken to hospital, which also included two of the cleaner's colleagues who raised the initial alarm. Yeah, it's a bit shocking knowing someone's dead. Yeah, it's shocking and I think it's a good restaurant. So it's really tragic to hear someone, you know, passed away. Shocking news for me as police. It's so bad. I'm feeling so sad as well. The owner says the gas is turned off every night and while specialist crews have managed to stop the leak, they're yet to determine the cause. We identified a source of carbon monoxide. Were extremely high levels within the building. Carbon monoxide gives no warning. It's colourless, odourless and deadly. A measurement of just nine parts per million in an area over eight hours is generally accepted as a safe limit for workplaces. But crews here detected levels between 80 and 200 times that. You just can't survive it when you're breathing that. With several other restaurant staff living upstairs, it's lucky no one else was killed. In some breaking news now, Sandra, I do have an update on those five incredibly brave police officers. They can confirm they have all now been discharged from hospital. Three of them were brought here to Blacktown Hospital. Two of them were taken to Mount Druid and they had some pretty nasty symptoms. They had blurred vision as well as headaches. That was as a result of inhaling carbon dioxide. But they are said to be doing very well now after a few hours of observation.
