Sheltered from the elements, the torch began its journey on Wednesday towards the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The president of the International Olympic Committee struggled to hold back her tears. This place is very special. And it's so special because in a divided world that we live in today, the Games hold a truly symbolic place. And it's our duty, it's our responsibility to ensure that the athletes from around the world can come together peacefully. The flame will travel nearly 12,000 kilometres, first within Greek territory before a handover ceremony next Thursday in Athens. In Italy, the relay will begin in Rome two days later. The Olympic flame will pass through all the Italian provinces, 60 cities, 300 towns, 20 regions and all the UNESCO sites. It will travel from the northern peaks to the southern shores, carried by 10,001 proud torchbearers. After a first stop at Cortina on the 26th of January, the Olympic flame will arrive in Milan at the San Siro Stadium, where the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games will take place on the 6th of February.
