Taxi drivers in New York City held a rally to protest the approval of Waymo's driverless taxi testing in parts of Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn. The protest, organized in front of Governor Hochul's office, called on city and state officials to halt the testing, citing fears that the introduction of autonomous vehicles could threaten the livelihoods of thousands of taxi drivers.

The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers voiced concerns that as many as 200,000 drivers could be at risk of losing their jobs. Waymo, which already operates self-driving taxis in several major U.S. cities, received approval from Mayor Adams for the New York City pilot.
