One of Sydney's ugliest roads could be in for a bold makeover as governments look for solutions to the nation's housing shortage. The proposal to revamp Parramatta road includes rezoning a section of the inner west to allow higher density housing.

The New South Wales government has announced a rezoning proposal for Parramatta Road, targeting the corridor from Leichhardt to Camperdown. The plan aims to deliver up to 8,000 new homes, with a mix of developments including some high-rise buildings, to address the region's housing shortage. No compulsory property acquisitions are planned, and the government expects most transactions will be voluntary as property values rise.

The rezoning process is expected to take up to 18 months, followed by public consultation. This initiative is part of the state's broader goal to build 377,000 homes by mid-2029 under the National Housing Accord. Despite these efforts, home completions remain near record lows. Similar housing initiatives are also underway in other Australian cities, including Melbourne.

I'd like to turn this tired thoroughfare into one of the vibrant communities that it can and should be. Up to 8,000 homes could be delivered as part of a rezoning proposal to boost density and housing supply, stretching from Leichhardt to Camperdown. It means that many thousands more young people and renters and essential workers can find a home here in the Inner West. There is not enough housing for like young people coming up and trying to live and work in the area. Parramatta Road needs a change. The government anticipates a mixture of developments, including high-rise. We're not talking about everything being mega towers. Sydney is the 800th densest city in the world and it doesn't mean that we're going to automatically turn into Tokyo overnight. No compulsory acquisitions are being considered. We would expect to see a lot of transactions undertaken because people want to sell their properties because they're worth a lot more. The rezoning process is expected to take up to 18 months with public consultation to follow. To meet its share of the National Housing Accord, the NSW government is aiming to build 377,000 homes by mid-2029. In the first eight months of the five-year target, it says it's completed 33,000 homes with a further 74,000 under construction. And for all the government's grand announcements, we are still seeing home completions at near record lows. Sydney isn't the only city with bold housing plans. This week, the Victorian government announced plans to build apartment towers up to 16 storeys across Melbourne's inner suburbs as our major cities look for solutions to fix Australia's housing crisis.
