A Norwegian tourist was attacked by a group of young adults at St Kilda Pier, Melbourne, after being falsely accused of taking photos of people at the pier. Despite showing his phone to prove his innocence, the tourist was assaulted, robbed, and left with a broken arm and facial injuries, and his phone was thrown into the ocean. The attack occurred in broad daylight and was witnessed by bystanders. 

Police identified the main offenders as three men and a woman in their early 20s. The victim was treated at Alfred Hospital before returning to Norway, cutting his holiday short. Authorities have increased police presence at St Kilda Beach due to this and other recent violent incidents in the area.

The victim was accused of taking photos of people at the pier. During the course of the confrontation, he's shown his phone to the offenders, proven that he's not done it, and they proceeded to assault him anyways. The attack last Thursday unfolding in broad daylight on St Kilda Pier in full view of stunned bystanders. People behaving in this manner, it's deplorable. Police say the 34-year-old was assaulted, robbed, and left with a broken arm and facial injuries. His phone later tossed into the ocean. It seems to me that they've used that as an excuse to confront this man, and then when it's not followed through, they've assaulted him anyway. Could happen to anyone. Scary stuff, yeah. As a tourist myself, very concerning. The primary offenders, three men and a woman, are all believed to be in their early 20s. For him to be confronted, particularly in the middle of the day, you know, 1pm on a weekday, with this kind of behaviour, he was just overwhelmed. He was so shocked. The victim spent six hours being treated at the Alfred Hospital before it's believed he returned home to Norway, his Australian Christmas holiday cut short. I can't imagine how frustrating and effectively debilitating it must be to be on a holiday in a foreign country and have your one source of information to the rest of the world taken off you and destroyed. It's not the first time police have been called to St Kilda Beach, with authorities forced to break up a brawl that landed three children in custody earlier this month. Two similar incidents also occurred last week, following a brawl inside a Woolworths supermarket, which saw the riot squad called in. Police are continuing their summer operation at St Kilda Beach, with an increased focus on intelligence-led policing. Involving specialist units, including the Mounted Branch, Air Wing, Water Police, and the public order response team. Rebecca Powell, 10 News.
