South Korean intelligence considers Joo Ae the most likely successor to Kim Jong-un, though questions remain about her future in the male-dominated ruling dynasty.

Standing by her father in a black suit as they stepped off their armoured train in Beijing, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's teenage daughter, known as Joo Ae by South Korean intelligence, has made her first public outing overseas. It fuels further speculation she may be his potential successor in the family's dynastic rule over the nuclear-armed state. Joo Ae, estimated to be around 13 years old, was first shown to the world in state media photos in 2022, as she accompanied her father to the launch of a massive intercontinental ballistic missile. Her public appearances increased from 2023, with state media referring to her as the respected daughter of the leader. Over the years as she has grown, so too have her appearances in more diplomatic settings. From inspecting a weapons factory, to the launch of a warship, and the unveiling of a major housing project in Pyongyang, analysts said there is no evidence Kim Jong-un ever accompanied his father Kim Jong-il on overseas trips. She appeared in the Chinese capital on Wednesday, where Kim Jong-un attended a massive World War II military parade seen as a projection of power by President Xi Jinping. President of the University of North Korean Studies Yang Moo-jing says China's acceptance of her visit suggests they respect Kim Jong-un's position. It may also be a signal of strategic intent from her father. For North Korean citizens, seeing Joo Ae's exposure expand from within the country to overseas will likely reinforce the perception that she is almost certainly moving towards becoming the successor. Kim Jong-un and the North Korean authorities appear to be sending such a message deliberately. There is still little known about other Kim children, however South Korea's intelligence agency considers Joo Ae to be the most likely successor so far, despite questions over whether she can ultimately rise to the top of the male-dominated dynasty.
