In response, NATO has established a new command air operations center in Boden, Norway, to enhance defense capabilities in the high north, reflecting concerns about potential confrontations with Russia in multiple regions.

Ten of NATO's northernmost members have reinforced the bond they forged more than a decade ago, a pledge to move first and fast together as the Joint Expeditionary Force, or JEF, if they come under threat. We are NATO's first responders, so this is a powerful signal to Putin and any other would-be aggressors. They're planning more coordination, more exercises, and now have invited Ukraine as a partner, recognizing its significance in European defense. Every kilometer we hold, every missile we intercept, every drone we shot down contributes to the safety of the continent. The JEF doesn't need to wait for the agreement of NATO's 32 members to act. These kinds of sub-regional coalitions can help maintain a presence, can provide responses, and do things to help deter Russia in areas without maybe having other countries in the alliance that might not be interested or might not want to do that. Agility is more important than ever as Russia increasingly tests NATO, busting borders with fighter jets and drones, prompting both the alliance and the European Union to pour resources into protection of the eastern flank. But the high north must also remain a high priority, researcher Andrej Dietrich warns. The baseline scenario is that the Baltics will be next in line in a way, and we absolutely need to take that risk very, very seriously. But at the same time, we must not neglect the other regions where there can also be a crisis and we can see a confrontation between Russia and NATO. The Arctic is the region that we should be looking at right now. NATO's just taken a big step to do that, establishing a new command air operations center in Boden, Norway. Until now, those hubs have only been in Germany and Spain. The new center will be housed in a Cold War era military base inside a mountain, protected from nuclear attacks. It makes perfect sense because I think a case can be made that we are in a new Cold War. The goal of boosting Arctic defense is to keep it cold.
