A special grand jury in Summit County has decided not to indict an Akron police officer involved in the shooting death of Michael Jones. The incident occurred after police attempted to arrest Jones, who was suspected of failing to return a rented U-Haul, at a gas station. 

Body camera footage reportedly showed a struggle between Jones and two officers before the U-Haul began moving, at which point an officer fired two shots, resulting in Jones' death. The president of Akron's Fraternal Order of Police stated that the officer acted according to his training in a dangerous situation.

And in Akron, an officer has been cleared of wrongdoing after shooting a man in 2024. A special grand jury in Summit County cleared the officer today. Police said the suspect, Michael Jones, rented a U-Haul but failed to return it. So a theft report was filed. A few weeks later, an officer approached Jones, who was in the U-Haul while at a gas station in Akron, and told Jones he was under arrest. Body camera video shows a struggle with two officers getting in the U-Haul, then it started moving. An officer shot twice, killing Jones. In a statement today, the president of Akron's Fraternal Order of Police said, quote, we stand by our officer who followed his training in a deadly situation.
