Fernand is expected to fizzle out as it heads north into the Atlantic, but what will come next?

Meteorologists indicate that the remnants of Fernand are moving northeast with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, but are expected to lose tropical characteristics soon due to colder waters and steering winds. The jet stream and a weaker Bermuda-Azores high are diverting potential storms offshore, while upwelling from previous storms like Aaron has cooled surface ocean temperatures.

Current atmospheric patterns resemble those typical of July, with dry, dusty air suppressing the development of new storms from the Cabo Verde region. The next named storm would be Gabriella, but there are no imminent signs of its formation.

it's going to continue to move northeast. Max sustained winds now 60 MPH. But by this time tomorrow evening, it may be on its last period of time here as a true tropical entity. Colder water to the north. Steering flow, by the way, is our friend here. We have a big dip in the jet stream, keeping everything diverted offshore. The Bermuda Azores high is nudged farther east. It's a bit weaker, so that is good news. And take a look at this. Look at the path of Aaron. Aaron has laid a nice stripe of cooler water off the east coast of the U. S. In the wake of the storm, Aaron had such a large wind field. It swept the top layer of water away, and that allows deeper, colder water to come up to the surface. We call that upwelling, and that refrigerates the surface of the ocean for a period of time. This map looks a lot more like a typical July pattern. We got dry, dusty air gobbling up a lot of those Cabo Verde waves. Our next storm will be Gabriella. No imminent signs of that storm yet.
