Now that NOCSAE has data regarding head injury risks for youth versus adult tackle football players, it has released the first athletic equipment safety standard for a youth football helmet.

A new safety standard for youth football helmets has been established to address the distinct risks faced by younger players, whose head and neck injury risks differ from those of adults. The standard was developed following extensive research and field testing by Noxie, an organization specializing in athletic equipment safety, which found that younger children experience higher head accelerations due to more frequent out-of-control falls.

The new helmets, designed for players before high school, will be lighter to accommodate weaker necks and reduce injury risk. The standard is scheduled to take effect in 2027, allowing manufacturers time to develop compliant helmets, while existing helmets may be used until their designated replacement dates.

Students will soon return to school. That means youth football is around the corner and that comes with new standards for safety. KSHB 41 reporter Todd Palmer, amplifying the voices of experts on the science behind the decision aimed at keeping kids safe. The risk for head and neck injuries that kids face is different than that of adults, and that's why, for the first time ever, a new youth football helmet standard is set to go into effect. Youth are not small adults. They have particular needs. That was the starting point for Noxie and Overland Park based organization that develops athletic equipment safety standards to invest a half million dollars into youth football research to actually go out and test on the field during practices and during games. Exactly what these kids were experiencing. Out of that came some data that was actually fairly surprising, one of which is the younger age group actually has higher head accelerations than the older age group. But it's because they hit the ground more often out of control. New helmets designed for youth players before high school will weigh less. Yeah, we have five year olds and six year olds, so you know they they seem to attend. Oh, it's like bobblehead football kind of a little bit and that bobblehead doll effect means that a youngster taking a blow. It can be a much lesser blow, but it produces great accelerations to the head and youngsters with that weak neck can't support the weight of an adult helmet. So this helmet will be a lighter one. Knowing that you have a helmet that's kind of tailored or a standard. It's tailored to that age. To me is comforting. It's tailored for the risks and exposures for kids at that age. The technology of the helmets is just going to keep getting better and better. I just kind of curious to see what a 3 1⁄2 pound helmet is going to be looking like. The new testing standard goes into effect March 1st, 2027, giving manufacturers time to develop new lighter helmets, but existing helmets can still be used until their designated.
