A recent CBS News poll indicates that Americans are feeling more pessimistic about the US economy. The proportion of people who believe the economy is worsening has increased over recent months, with only about a third now describing it as good. Inflation and rising prices remain the primary concerns for most respondents.

Additionally, about half of those surveyed view the job market negatively, a shift towards greater pessimism compared to six months ago. Nearly half also believe there are fewer good jobs available in their area than five years ago. Concerns about artificial intelligence are also notable, with a substantial number fearing it will reduce job opportunities in their fields and more than half expecting AI to have a negative overall impact on the economy.

All right, let's talk about your money now. Americans' views on the economy, it's not getting any better. Next to me, you see fresh new CBS News polling just out, showing that in the past few months, more people actually say it's getting worse. Anthony Salvato breaks down what this new data reveals. Views of the US economy, still not good. They haven't been for years. Tick down a little bit more now to just a third saying it's good. Prices, inflation, those are the top ways that Americans tell us they evaluate the economy, and they say prices have still been going up. Now, part of this, though, is the direction. Let me show you this. The percent who say the economy is getting worse, that's been steadily increasing over the last few months, too. That, a little more pessimism now than there has been. Now, part of this, besides prices, is also jobs. Let me show you these evaluations now of the US job market, just about half, saying that it's bad. That's a change from six months ago in that more pessimistic direction. Another part of this is when you ask people to compare a longer term, compared to five years ago, almost half, say there's fewer good jobs available in the area where they live. That's part of all that pessimism that's going on with the US economy. Another part of this, so much discussion nowadays about the potential impact of AI on jobs, so we ask people about that, and there's a substantial number who say that they think AI may decrease the number of jobs in their field. Now, at the same time, they say if they have a job, AI might make it easier, but that's a net negative impact right there. In fact, overall, perhaps not surprising if they think it'll have that negative impact on jobs, more than half think that the impact overall of AI is gonna be bad for the economy.
