The U.S. Defense Department has introduced new rules that require journalists covering the Pentagon to have all information pre-approved before it can be published. Reporters who do not adhere to these guidelines may lose their credentials and access to the Pentagon. The new agreement, which is 17 pages long, restricts journalists from gathering or reporting even unclassified information unless it has been authorized by an official. 

Journalists have expressed concerns about how these changes will affect their ability to report live or unscripted news, as well as their access to sources within the Pentagon. The rules also extend to coverage of military bases and other related activities. While the Defense Department has not provided a specific reason for the new restrictions, the move comes amid recent leaks and sensitive reporting. President Donald Trump has voiced opposition to the policy.

Welcome back to CBS News 24-7. So let's talk about this. New reported restrictions for journalists covering the U.S. military at the Pentagon. The Defense Department ordering information published by the press must be pre-approved before public release. Reporters who do not follow the guidelines, well, they could lose access to the Pentagon. Yesterday President Donald Trump expressed opposition to the move. So let's go live to one of those journalists at the Pentagon right now. CBS News senior national security correspondent Charlie Daggett. Charlie, good to have you with us today. How does this change things for you and other journalists there? Nothing stops reporters, Reeds. Look, if we sign this new agreement, 17 pages long, and abide by it, the conversation we're having right now would not happen. Not now, not ever, never. Reporters who don't sign the statement agreeing to these new rules will have, thank goodness I'm not wearing it, our press credentials yanked anyway. We're not supposed to put them on camera. Those rules state in part that journalists can no longer gather or report information, even if it's unclassified, unless it's been authorized for release by an appropriate authorizing official, essentially them. And the hard part about this is like 95% of the information that we gather here, the reason we work out of the Pentagon, is because we speak to our sources in person. We don't just wait for documentation, unclassified documentation, to be given to us. So it's going to be difficult to figure out a way to do that. And the fact that, you know, you and I are talking right now, the information that we're discussing hasn't officially been cleared. Does that fall under that same sort of category? Because a lot of what we do is live stuff. It's not scripted. I can't go down the hall and say, look, am I okay to say this? So that's where we stand right now. And there are kind of sensitivities that we can't really go into about how the press corps is going to react and how we're going to manage this going forward. But it needs to be addressed, because it's going to be difficult for us to agree to the rules. Because it also expands beyond here. It has to do with, like, access to military bases, you know, and beds and barks, you know, some of the work that you've done in the past. Would you fall under that category, you know? So we just need a little bit more clarification as we go forward. And does that document that you were given there and you held up on television say why, what the reason is for this? No, it does not. And I'm not going to speculate as to why that's happening. There's information that's coming out of the building that they're not happy about. And they feel that some of it's been classified, at least some of it's sensitive. You know, it's kind of some of the reporting that we've done. If you want to talk about Signal Gate, for instance, you know, there have been leaks that have come out that we've tried to follow up and chase up. But most of the work that we do is give you a sort of status report. What's happening off the coast of Venezuela? What's happening in the sort of CENTCOM region? Is the president serious about taking Bagram Air Base back? You know, what about drone strikes, etc.? That's the bread and butter of what we do here. The other stuff, it's important because we hold leaders to account if there's a leak like there was in that Signal Gate, which we might hear, by the way, the Inspector General's report is supposed to come out in the next few days. That might have something to do, coincide with these new restrictions. But that's where we are right now. And as I said, we're trying to seek a little bit more clarification as to how we were able to work the system as they're asking us to do so. Right. And not only what happens there in the Pentagon affects the military and Americans, but also American soldiers and military families. Charlie Daggett, thank you so much.
