A huge immigration detention facility built in El Paso, Texas, could house thousands of migrants detained by the Trump administration. CBS News' Jason Allen reports.

A new immigration detention center has opened in El Paso, Texas, on Fort Bliss Army property. The facility, known as the East Montana Detention Center or 'Lone Star lockup,' began operations with about 1,000 detainees and now houses approximately 1,500, including both men and women. Some detainees have been transferred from a facility in Florida that is winding down operations.

The center is a soft-sided tent facility built in an undeveloped area and could eventually hold up to 5,000 people, making it the largest immigration detention center in US history. Advocates have raised concerns about the rapid expansion of the facility, the care of detainees, and potential difficulties for lawyers to access and communicate with their clients as the population grows.

You don't see any walls You don't see any gates or fences because this facility has really been built out in the middle of a somewhat undeveloped part of the army base It's it's all sand dunes and we've seen some dust storms as we've been out here in the late afternoon Hours, and this is where this soft-sided tent facility has been built It opened less than two weeks ago with about a thousand people We talked with representative Veronica Escobar who's now had two visits inside and she said the population now up to about 1,500 this could eventually grow up to 5,000 people it is men and she has told us that there are women Being housed here as well now and some of the people inside have been brought from, Florida These were people who may have early on been held at the alligator Alcatraz in the Everglades in South, Florida And they have since been moved here the concern for some advocates is the care of people inside this facility Which has gone up extremely fast and their ability to speak to lawyers and for lawyers to have visits with them something that attorneys are working on right now, but they say could continue to be more difficult as the Facility continues to bring in more people and something they are currently trying to address with federal officials back to you
