Families of the University of Idaho murder victims directly addressed the admitted killer, Bryan Kohberger, at his sentencing on Wednesday.

Newly unsealed police documents show that investigators have not identified a motive for the crime or any clear connection between Kohberger and the victims, including through social media. Kohberger, who declined to speak at length during the hearing, remains in a maximum security facility. He was also ordered to pay $270,000 in restitution to the victims' families.

The victim impact statements lasted about two hours, and then Brian Koberger had a chance to speak, but he only spoke for about an hour and a half, and then he went on to speak. And then he went on to speak, but he only said three words. I respectfully declined. The judge says even a Koberger had said more. There's no guarantee that he would be telling the truth. And as you mentioned hundreds of police documents unsealed overnight, investigators say, though, even with all that evidence, they still don't know why Koberger chose. That specific house. We have never to this day found a motive for this. Um, you know, you said earlier you couldn't identify a reason the house is targeted. Do you have a motive? We don't. Inside court, families and friends of the victims gave emotional statements. The two surviving roommates talked about the trauma they're still living with ever since that November 2022 night, one victim sister called Koberger a quote sociopath, psychopath and even the judge and lead prosecutor got emotional, wiping away tears. Many family members looked Koberger directly in the eyes as they spoke. He didn't react, just stared back. Koberger pled guilty earlier this month to avoid the death penalty, and the judge sentenced him to four consecutive life terms without parole and 10 more years for burglary. He's also been ordered to pay $270,000 to the victim's families, but not everyone agrees with the outcome. It wasn't justice. It was just, uh, it was a shortcut. And we we said from the very beginning, we're not interested in a shortcut for our daughter. The sentence will ensure that this evil will never again terrorize the family as he did ours and three others. And investigators say they did not find any ties between social media and Koberger's accounts and the victims. They say Koberger had wiped everything clean on social media. As for Koberger, though, right now, he remains in a maximum security facility just outside of Boise. Bob and Roxy Kennedy. What stuck out to you the most there? I imagine just being inside the courtroom was extremely emotional to hear all the victims, families and also hearing from survivors and seeing Koberger in the house, uh, haunt them for the rest of their lives. Yeah, just so many things. I would say seeing Koberger's mother and sister there was surprising. Usually I see his dad there. He at least attended the plea deal hearing but was not there yesterday and then just the emotion of it all. I mean, some of the victim impact statements were fiery. A lot of them, you know, pointed at Koberger spoke directly to them, but a lot of them were also just very heavy and emotional and difficult to hear. Yeah, I know. Just watching this from the screen, it was frustrating for me because he's so stoic and has no emotion, just like this hollow expression as if I'm thinking to myself, does this guy understand what they're saying? Is he going to show any emotion at all? You almost want to jump in there and shake him just to get some kind of reaction. Yeah, that was my job to watch Kloberg or Koberger closely and see if he reacted to anything. You know, I would look at the judge. I would look at the victims and anytime there would be an outburst, people laughing, crying. I would look at Koberger and every single time he really didn't make too much of a movement, some nodding of the head, maybe some shifting in his seat, but that was pretty much it. Yeah, so frustrating and upsetting for families. They just looking for some emotion, perhaps, and some answers to why he did this. All right, Kennedy. Thank you so much.
