Newly released court documents and surveillance images have shed light on a shooting near a Washington, D.C. metro station involving members of the National Guard. The suspect, Rachmanella Lockenwall, allegedly opened fire, resulting in the death of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and the hospitalization of Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe and himself. Lockenwall, who previously served on a CIA-backed team in Afghanistan and was granted asylum in the U.S., has pleaded not guilty to murder, assault, and firearms charges.

In response to the incident, the Trump administration has halted immigration applications from 19 countries and is considering expanding the travel ban to about 30 countries. Lockenwall's next court appearance is scheduled for January 14th.

Newly-released surveillance images revealed in court documents appear to show the suspect standing near a busy Washington, D.C. metro station before turning a corner and opening fire at members of the National Guard. He allegedly was shouting alahuakbar, Arabic for God is greatest. 20-year-old specialist Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe were struck in the head. The gunman then engaged in a shootout with another guardsman and at one point bent down next to the wounded soldiers before being shot at by an uninjured guardsman while reloading. The suspect remains hospitalized, as does Staff Sergeant Wolfe. Specialist Beckstrom died Thanksgiving Day. The alleged shooter, Rachmanella Lockenwall, served on a CIA-backed operations team in his native Afghanistan before he fled to the U.S. in 2021 and was granted asylum earlier this year. In response to the shooting, the Trump administration is now halting all immigration applications from 19 countries. And officials tell CBS News the administration is also considering expanding the travel ban list from 19 to around 30 countries. Lockenwall has pleaded not guilty to murder, assault and firearms charges. This individual was brought into this country as a result of the largesse of the American people and the American government and he betrayed us.
