Michiel Silstra, a 20-year-old apprentice shipbuilder, competed in a local event aiming to become the Frisian junior champion. Despite a strong second attempt that put him in the lead, Silstra suffered a knee injury on his final jump and was unable to compete in the finals. Fierlieppen originated as a practical technique for farmers to cross water ditches and has evolved into a competitive sport since the 1950s. Today, it is recognized as an important part of Dutch cultural heritage, with hopes among enthusiasts that it may one day become an Olympic event.

A moment of quiet before the excitement begins. Michiel Silstra is making his final preparations for a unique competition using a bicycle tube. This is resin. Super easy to use. You spray it on your hands and on the tube. And you have better grip. Michiel is 20 years old and hopes to become the Frisian junior champion in Fierlieppen. Fierlieppen is a mix of pole vaulting and long jumping. The goal is to jump as far as you can over a body of water. With a running start and a pole. If you don't fall, that is. My personal best is 21.48 meters. Today I'm aiming for something close to 21. The judges count the best of three. Michiel's first attempt. A misstep. Just under 19 meters. That was bad. You're not going far like that. Definitely not perfect. Still, Michiel's parents cheer him on from the stands. There's so much to it. The run-up, the technique, the strength to clear the ditch. We're really proud. Michiel is an apprentice shipbuilder. Fierlieppen is just a hobby. But like everyone here, he trains hard. The pressure is on. The competition is fierce. Time for a second attempt. 20.66 meters. Michiel takes the lead. But not all of the 200 spectators know the sport. For most here, the jumps are a local tradition. Fierlieppen goes back centuries. A technique farmers in Friesland used to cross water ditches in their fields. In the 1950s, it became a competitive sport. Today, it's listed as an intangible cultural heritage of the Netherlands. Michiel first learned the sport in school. It's a pretty extreme sport. So much adrenaline. That's why I do it. But in a stroke of bad luck, Michiel's final jump went wrong. He injured his knee and can't compete in the finals. Still, he has big dreams. That the sport might one day become Olympic. Olympic fierlieppen. An easy gold for the Netherlands.
