Neighbours reported hearing gunshots and described a chaotic scene Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, Kansas, as police responded to the fatal shooting of a Wyandotte County deputy. Authorities continue their investigation.

A Wyandotte County Sheriff's deputy was shot during an altercation while overseeing a house move in Kansas City. The suspect exchanged gunfire with the deputy, then barricaded himself inside the residence as police backup arrived. After approximately two hours of negotiations, the suspect exited the house and was apprehended with non-life-threatening injuries. Neighbors reported hearing multiple rounds of gunfire and described the situation as intense and frightening. The Kansas City Police Department is investigating the initial incident, while the Kansas Bureau of Investigation will review the subsequent exchange of gunfire.

Fernando our heart goes out to everyone involved today. Our team coverage continues with Grant Stevens. Grant I know a neighbor shared some video that shows how chaotic this scene was earlier today. Abby it really does and I want to warn some of you guys at home some of you might find this video difficult. We don't show anything bad you won't see anything nasty on there but this does show the intensity and the gunfire that happened because what this video shows us is what this spot was like right here just a couple hours ago. Based on when it was taken and the conversation in it that the people in it are having we believe this is shortly after the Wyandotte County Deputy had been shot. This is right around when the suspect barricaded himself inside while more backup came. Wyandotte County Sheriff's deputies were originally here as you've heard to supervise someone moving out of the house when this shooting happened. There was some kind of altercation and the suspect and deputy exchanged gunfire and that video you saw takes place minutes later right after that in the moment when KCKPD officers returned fire at the suspect and after about two hours of negotiation they did get the suspect to come out. He was hit by gunfire on his way out but his injuries are non-life-threatening they are not critical. Two neighbors the ones who took that video told me what seeing all this was like. So I'm going to leave the house and I'm locking the door and all of a sudden I heard like seven gunshots and I look over there's already a sheriff there and a deputy at that brown house down there but then all the cops showed up and as the cops are walking down there all you hear is probably like what 15 20 gunshots and the lady she's on her ring camera she's like oh my gosh I see the cop he's on the ground and the gunshots were like right there like yeah and like if anything went different like if we had left the house maybe two minutes earlier we could have been the ones getting in the middle of the gunshots you know that's what's scary to think about. It was a really really intense scene out here there were lots of neighbors around who saw this who heard this and then of course the scene that led hours after that but I do want to end with a look at what's going to be happening in this investigation next. So this investigation is happening right now it is actively underway what's happening next is going to be KCKPD KCKPD excuse me is investigating the initial incident between the Wyandotte County deputy and the suspect but then that volley of gunfire that followed afterwards that will be investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation they oftentimes step in when there are officer involved shootings like this.
