Almost two years into the war in Gaza, alongside the ever-mounting death toll and flattened infrastructure, there’s another casualty of war: children’s education. With "nearly all" school-aged children out of education, they're at risk of becoming a "lost generation," the United Nations says.

The United Nations has reported that nearly all school-aged children in Gaza are currently out of education, with approximately 660,000 children affected. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the destruction of 95% of educational infrastructure, forcing many schools to become shelters for displaced families.

A report to the UN Human Rights Council indicated that school buildings have been targeted, and the UN warns of the risk of a 'lost generation' among Gaza's children. While efforts have been made to provide distance learning to about 60,000 children, widespread cuts in telecommunications and electricity have limited access for many.

'Nearly all' school-aged population out of education, UN says

Here, in Gaza City, alongside the ever-mounting death toll and flattened infrastructure, there's another casualty of war, children's education. This building used to be a UN-run school. Now it's a shelter for displaced people. According to the UN, some 660,000 children are out of education, nearly all Gaza's school-aged population. Instead of studying in school, we're now living inside it. We carry a bag of clothes instead of a school bag. We neither play nor learn. There's no education now. We live inside the school, where we're displaced, eat and sleep. In the 23 months since the war began, 95% of educational infrastructure has been destroyed. A report to the UN Human Rights Council found that Israeli forces targeted school buildings. Children affected are now at risk, the UN says, of becoming a lost generation. We want the war to end. We want to return to our homes. We want to go back to school. We want to do something useful. It's been a long time since we ate anything that sustains us. We want to go back to our houses and live a normal life. This is not a life. The UN is trying to fill the gap with distance learning, and to date almost 60,000 children have benefited. But cuts in telecoms and electricity put it out of reach for many.
