A 30-year-old man has been arrested, accused of setting fire to his mother's home in Narellan Vale. She, the only resident home, has escaped unharmed but the house has been destroyed, and a pet cat is missing.

A family home in Narellan Vale was destroyed in a fire that authorities have determined was deliberately lit. Police allege that Yu-Hei Wong, a 30-year-old international student and the son of the homeowner, is responsible for the blaze. Wong's mother, who was home at the time, escaped unharmed. 

Wong has been charged with aggravated break and enter and several domestic violence-related offences in connection with the incident. He did not apply for bail during his court appearance. Neighbours have since supported the affected family, helping them salvage belongings from the damaged property, though their pet cat remains missing.

The fire ignited just before 1pm yesterday, quickly spreading from the car to the caravan to the house. I came out the front and there was just people everywhere. Fire engines, police, the house across the road was on fire. 30 firefighters battled the blaze and protected neighbouring properties, but they couldn't save this one. It's as bad as it gets, which is unfortunate for that family. Luckily Wong's mother, who was home alone, got out unharmed. But the tragedy has left many asking, why? At the scene, witnesses say the accused was handing out post-it notes. On them, he'd written his social media account name, which led to what appeared to be a lengthy story about his life, written online. In this next chapter, he's facing aggravated break and enter charges, as well as several counts of domestic violence-related offences connected to the alleged arson attack. In court today, he did not apply for bail, but he's not the only one sleeping elsewhere. Neighbours have rallied around the family this afternoon, helping them to pack up whatever they can salvage from inside the home. But one thing they have not yet been able to find is their pet cat.
