Tennis legend Rafael Nadal tells World Sport’s Amanda Davies that watching Rory McIlroy achieve his dream of winning the Masters moved him to tears.

Additionally, Nadal discussed his activities following retirement, mentioning that he remains busy with travel, his academy, and foundation work, as well as spending time with his family. He commented on his enjoyment of golf, though he has played less than expected, and shared his admiration for McIlroy as both a sportsman and a person. Nadal also mentioned tennis star Roger Federer’s developing interest in golf, suggesting that if Federer practices, he could become a great player.

Nadal discusses Rory McIlroy’s emotional Masters victory

So how is retirement, in inverted commas, compared to what you were expecting? Yeah, good. I am doing more things than what I expected, being honest. I thought that was going to be a little bit more relaxing, but I keep doing a lot of things, travels, spending time working on the academy, foundation and other projects, trying to learn things and yeah, enjoying all this process, spend time with family and yeah, just enjoying this new chapter in my life. Have you been playing much golf? Less than what I thought. Did you watch the Masters? I watched, yeah, every single shot. Yeah, have you spoken to Rory McIlroy since? I test him, yeah, before and after and yeah, I, of course, I received an answer from him. I have been super emotional. I was, honestly, I was crying at home when he won. Yeah, I've been very, very emotional and I was suffering a lot with him. Of course, Justin is a gentleman and he deserves to, but I mean, 11 years without winning a major for Rory, for a player like Rory is, yeah, it's too much time and he deserved it and he was playing so good and I suffered a lot last day. You faced a lot of pressure and expectation because of always winning, particularly at Roland Garros. For Rory, the pressure had been building for such a long time because he had won and then hadn't. From your perspective as a sportsperson, what were you thinking as that played out? Well, I honestly had the confidence all the time that he will make it happen because he deserved it, first of all, and I always think that in some way there is justice and after what happened in the US Open last year and you know how important it is for him to win the Masters and complete the career at Grand Slam, I really believe that probably he knew before the round that he was going to go through all these pressure moments and the beginnings are tough, but I think he accepted very well, no? Very tough first hole, I think he was lucky in the first couple of holes with a couple of drivers that stayed in the bunker just for this. I think he made a very risky shot in the 11, he was lucky there, but then again, the mistake in the 13, third shot, for me that was the toughest moment of the round. Your recollection is incredible, I mean, it's like you recall your tennis matches. Well, yeah, because I know very well the golf course in Augusta, I love the golf, I love Rory, honestly, and I love him as a sportsman and as a person and I wanted him to win so much, so I watched every single shot and yeah, it was very, very emotional at the end, I was so, so happy. What do you rate as Roger's ability on the golf course? I've seen he's taken it up. I think he's playing more and more, he likes, yeah, he has an amazing swing, I saw, well, like tennis, he has a very aesthetical swing, well, yeah, of course, if he's able to spend time on the golf course, he's going to be a great player. Have you ever played against him? No, but I still give him a few shots, I think. Yeah, I look forward, perhaps, to the reinvention of the rivalry. If he invites me to Switzerland, he's more than welcome to play in Mallorca anytime.
