The incident began when explosive devices were discovered in an apartment building by a resident, leading experienced deputies to transport them to a secure facility, where one detonated.

No suspects have been identified, and law enforcement agencies including the ATF, FBI, and LAPD are involved in the ongoing investigation. The sheriff's department has described the event as its deadliest in over 160 years. Officials are warning the public about the dangers of unknown objects and have sent forensic evidence for federal analysis, with results expected in several weeks.

The announcement follows an intense week that led authorities to a marina south of the city where a boat was believed to have been searched. No one connected to the explosive devices has been identified. They were found at an apartment building July 18th by a resident cleaning a storage area. There, the deputies, all experienced explosive experts, retrieved the devices before moving them 20 miles away by truck to the secure Sheriff's Department facility. Authorities know for sure one bomb exploded, leading the sheriff to pull out all the stops in search of another one. We are conducting an extremely thorough investigation that involves not only our partners at the ATF, the FBI, the Los Angeles Police Department, and our Homicide Bureau. Every avenue is being looked at. The loss of the officers have left the Sheriff's Department shaken. Together, the men leave behind 16 children. We need to know what happened. We owe it to the families and for God's sake, I never want this to happen again. It's the deadliest incident in the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department in more than 160 years. With one explosive device still unaccounted for, the lead investigator for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms issued a warning. We want to emphasize to the general public how dangerous these devices are. If you find anything that looks like a grenade or an explosive device or is just an unknown object, please contact the law enforcement. Forensics evidence taken after the explosion has been sent to a special federal lab for testing in the hope of determining the manufacturer. Results may not be known for another 45 days, the sheriff said.
