More than half a million people have been affected nationwide, with tens of thousands forced into emergency shelters amid shortages of treated water and fuel for rescue operations.

The floods have destroyed thousands of kilometres of roads, hampering aid delivery and leaving many survivors stranded. Opposition leaders have criticized the government's response and infrastructure quality, while the United Nations warns of an escalating crisis as Mozambique now faces the onset of cyclone season.

After weeks of heavy rains, floodwaters here in Mozambique's Maputo province have submerged vast areas of land. Nationwide, more than 100 people have been killed since the rainy season began in October. Survivors have been left stranded. I'm scared to cross here. We want to go home. Since the day before yesterday, we've been stuck on this side. We've decided to take a risk. The floods have destroyed thousands of kilometres of roads, preventing aid from getting through. We're working but we don't have all the data about what's happening now. This moment we're planning to go to the affected areas where there are people waiting to be rescued. We're still working. Across the country, more than half a million people have been affected, with tens of thousands forced into emergency shelters. But there's not enough treated water or fuel for boats. Opposition leaders blame the government. In the last 50 years since independence, Mozambique has received five billion dollars for climate change and urban cleaning. And with this money, practically all the social infrastructure that was built is of low quality. Bridges that will be destroyed in the next rainy season, bad roads. As soon as the floods disappear, we must have a serious investment plan. Mozambique is now entering cyclone season, raising fears of a double crisis on top of the current flooding.

President Trump spoke at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, addressing European allies as tensions rise over his Greenland demands. Mr. Trump demanded immediate negotiations to acquire the territory and claimed he wouldn't use force. Ed O'Keefe reports.
