After surviving 108 days of Israeli bombardment, photoreporter Motaz Azaiza managed to escape Gaza via Egypt, and he has since become an ambassador of sorts for the Palestinian territory, sharing the story of his people as the conflict rages on.

Motaz Azaiza, a 26-year-old Palestinian photojournalist, has become widely recognized for his on-the-ground reporting from Gaza during the conflict. Using his smartphone, Azaiza documented the daily realities faced by residents, providing first-hand accounts that have resonated with audiences globally. 

After leaving Gaza with the help of Qatar, Azaiza has continued his advocacy by participating in international events, such as a fundraising event for the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Philadelphia. UNRWA has faced funding challenges following allegations against some of its members, and is currently seeking additional support to address a significant budget shortfall.

Arriving on stage to cheering crowds, this is a new and at times overwhelming experience for Palestinian photojournalist Moutaz Aziza. In just a few months, the 26-year-old became one of the most followed journalists online. I didn't choose this. And I don't like to act like I'm good, I can't handle, no, I can't handle this. I can't handle this much of fame, you know, to become famous once in a while, looks to you, will want to hear from you. It's a real big responsibility. And this is not me. I just want to take pictures, that's it, please. Often recording videos on a smartphone, Moutaz Aziza reported on daily life in the enclave during the war. This camera saved a lot of lives, who wanted like their treatment, who want to, who need for evacuation from Gaza. The crowd praised the young journalist's work. As it's extremely difficult for journalists to report on the ground, he's provided audiences with first-hand accounts of the situation. I think that people like Moutaz and other Gazan journalists have really stuck a chord with us. The first time in my experience that we've seen a war be, you know, seen the effects of war be diffused so quickly. With the help of Qatar, Aziza was able to leave Gaza in January last year. But he wants to continue helping Palestinians still there. The photographer is here in Philadelphia for a fundraising event with UNRWA. Israel accused members of the agency of participating in Hamas' October 7th attacks. As a result, it lost funding from several donor countries. Since then, it has been actively seeking funds. On Tuesday, the agency's head said between now and the end of the year, they are facing a shortfall of about $200 million.
