Youth-led demonstrators in Morocco took to the streets on Thursday for a sixth straight night despite fears of more violence after police killed three people the night before.

While the gatherings initially began peacefully, some incidents have escalated into violence, resulting in property destruction and a small number of deaths.

The protests were loosely organized by the Gen Z 212 group, with frustration fueled by government spending ahead of the 2030 Soccer World Cup. Authorities have reported three deaths, including two killed by police, and over 190 suspects are under investigation. Human rights groups have raised concerns about police conduct, alleging arbitrary arrests and assaults on protesters.

Anger has not abated in Morocco. For nights on end, protesters have united against the government, demanding better public services. In some instances, it has turned violent. Buildings have been set alight and properties destroyed. Many citizens feel the isolated incidents undermine demonstrators' legitimate demands. We support the protests but reject the destruction. If we all want to protect public freedom, demand dignity and call for social justice, we must understand that social justice means giving everyone their rights. As a Moroccan youth, I reject this ugly behavior of destruction and violence. Through peaceful protests, we came out demanding our legitimate rights to proper health care and education. The initial peaceful gatherings began on Saturday, loosely organized by Morocco's Gen Z 212 group. Frustration at the government has been propelled by its million-dollar spending spree ahead of the 2030 Soccer World Cup. On Thursday, Morocco's Prime Minister praised the security forces for their response and announced the death toll had risen to three, two of whom were killed by police officers who accused them of wielding bladed weapons. Separately, public prosecutors announced they had initiated judicial investigations into more than 190 suspects. These events witnessed several manifestations of violence and vandalism, including throwing stones at public security forces and damaging citizens' property. The Moroccan Association of Human Rights say the police began arbitrary arrests and assaulting protesters before the violence erupted.
