The protests are described as the most significant threat to Iran's regime in nearly five decades. Internet shutdowns have made it increasingly difficult to obtain reliable information, and human rights groups warn of imminent executions of detained protesters.

More videos emerged yesterday, appearing to show the carnage of the regime's crackdown in Iran. Row upon row of body bags, many of the images too distressing for us to show you. Khaiwan Doradi is an investigator for an Iranian human rights monitoring group, who lives in exile in neighbouring Iraq. He and a network of others are working to verify videos of lethal violence by the Iranian authorities and the names of those who've been killed, including 17-year-old Amir Ali Haidari, who relatives say was shot at a protest last week. How big a threat are these protests to the Iranian regime? It's the biggest threat in 47 years, Doradi told us, referring to the entire period of Iran's Islamic rule. But since the authorities cut off the internet last Thursday, it's been harder to get any information out of Iran. Doradi told us that restoring internet access is much more important than any US military strikes, which he fears may achieve little. We prefer that the people topple the regime, he told us. Without their participation, military strikes will not be effective. Iranian human rights groups are warning that one protester, 26-year-old Irfan Soltani, may be executed by the regime today.
