The Therapeutic Goods Administration has removed ten more sunscreens from its register after tests revealed they provided significantly less protection than advertised.

Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has taken action to remove six more sunscreens from its register, bringing the total number of withdrawn products to 18. The move follows concerns that a faulty base formula used in some sunscreens is providing much lower sun protection than claimed, with some testing as low as SPF 4 instead of the advertised SPF 50 or higher.

The TGA has advised consumers to avoid 21 specific products suspected of using the faulty base and is investigating a UK-based laboratory involved in testing for several manufacturers. Consumers are encouraged to report any issues with sunscreen effectiveness, as refunds and potential compensation are being offered by brands recalling their products.

More sunscreen products pulled from shelves

And it's warning consumers not to use 21 products suspected of using a faulty base. The base formula that the TGA is focusing on is really concerning. It's showing that it's testing as low as four when it should be delivering 50 or 50 plus. Consumer group Choice first revealed the sunscreen saga in June, follow-up testing by the TGA raising bigger issues. They also have concerns about a lab that does a lot of testing on behalf of different manufacturers based in the UK. There could be more substandard products out there. Consumers urged to let the TGA know if their doesn't work, they might be in for some compensation. Brands that have been recalling their products are making available refunds.
