This new map in Missouri could help Republicans pick up an extra seat in Congress, but the Democratic lawmaker who has long represented the area says he is not backing down. Democratic Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver has represented Kansas City for decades. He was the city's first African-American mayor and is serving his 11th term in Congress, but his seat is now in jeopardy after the state legislature approved a map that dramatically alters his district. Is your legacy on the line? Well, I don't think so. It's almost comical. They said, we want to win, and Cleaver, we don't like the way your voters have been voting, so we're gonna bring some voters into the fifth district who vote the way we want. The move done with President Trump's urging follows a similar change in Texas and could spread to other GOP-led states ahead of the 2026 midterms. But I appreciate the leadership of President Trump. Gerrymandering is far from new. Democratic and Republican leaders did exactly that in some states after the 2020 census, but the timing and nature of these mid-decade changes has sparked backlash among Democratic states like California. We didn't want to be in this situation. The authoritarian in the White House put us in this situation. Congresswoman Yvette Clark chairs the Congressional Black Caucus. Right, this is a new course of action that is taking place, and it's disenfranchising communities of color. Cleaver says he plans to run again even if attempts to undo the redrawn lines fail. There were people who voted for it in Missouri who realized that this is not right. A handful of other states is considering redistricting changes.
