Medical professionals in Milwaukee are expressing concern about the risk of measles in Wisconsin, particularly as students return to school. As of the latest update, 25 cases have been confirmed in Oconto County, with all affected individuals being unvaccinated. Immunization rates in Milwaukee County remain below the threshold required for herd immunity, with only 75 percent of six-year-olds and 88 percent of 18-year-olds having received both recommended doses of the MMR vaccine. 

Dr. Elizabeth Sedgwick from the Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center emphasized that immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, adults in their 20s, and young children are particularly vulnerable. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has launched a dashboard to provide updates on measles cases and encourages residents to check their vaccination status. Free vaccines are available at Milwaukee City Health Department clinics.

I'm Merrill Hubbard in Milwaukee talking to medical professionals about the risk of getting measles in Wisconsin, especially as we enter the back to school time of year. Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can cause a rash, fever, cough, and in some cases, brain swelling, seizures, and death. As of September 9th, Wisconsin health officials identified 25 cases of measles in Oconto County. That's just north of Green Bay. While these cases were outside Milwaukee County, immunization rates here are low. According to the Wisconsin Immunization Registry, just 75 percent of six-year-olds have received both recommended MMR vaccine doses. By age 18, that increases to 88 percent. But herd immunity requires at least 93 to 95 percent coverage. Dr. Elizabeth Sedgwick at Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center says the most vulnerable groups are immunocompromised people, pregnant women, adults in their 20s, and young children. People like to think it's not going to happen to their kid, but if you're not vaccinated, it can happen to your child. And this is a very contagious and dangerous disease that is perfectly preventable. To check your vaccination status, visit the Wisconsin Immunization Registry, and the Milwaukee City Health Department offers free vaccines at their three clinics listed here on your screen. According to the agency, there have been 25 confirmed cases in the state. All of those people were not vaccinated against measles. Two hospitalizations have been reported so far. The Wisconsin Department of Health will update this data every Tuesday and Friday.
