As Uganda readies for Thursday's general election, supporters of President Yoweri Museveni are decked in yellow, the colour of the ruling National Resistance Movement. Yellow Museveni posters also appear everywhere. Since Saturday, there's a growing number of soldiers in the streets of the capital Kampala. The military says it's a preventative measure to ensure the elections take place peacefully. The opposition sees signs of authoritarianism. On Tuesday, authorities suspended internet services until further notice, citing misinformation, electoral fraud and incitement of violence. Museveni's main challenger, Bobby Wine, has accused the military of controlling the election and instigating violent crackdowns of his rallies. It's his second time running against 81-year-old Museveni, who's been in power since 1986. In 2021, Wine won 35% of the vote to Museveni's 58%, his smallest margin in six winning elections.
