Severe flooding in central and southeastern Mexico has caused the death toll to rise to at least 64, with dozens of people still unaccounted for. The floods, which affected five states, led to rivers overflowing, mudslides, and the destruction of roads and bridges, isolating many communities.

Authorities have responded by deploying over 10,000 troops and various rescue resources, while shelters have been established for displaced residents. Despite these efforts, some residents in the hardest-hit areas, such as Poza Rica in Veracruz, have expressed frustration at the government's response. President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the challenges and outlined a long-term plan for assistance, with estimates suggesting up to 100,000 homes may be affected.

The death toll rose sharply in Mexico this Monday from the floods in the country's center and southeast. In five states, rivers burst their banks, mud slipped across roads and bridges were swept away, isolating communities. Some people walked for hours to try and get help. Right now we are somewhat cut off, which is why we are sending a group of people coming on foot. We are coming for supplies because we are running out of essentials. All roads are closed and communities are completely cut off. Authorities have deployed more than 10,000 troops as well as boats, planes and helicopters. Shelters have been opened for those who've had to leave their homes. But some residents in the town of Poza Rica, Veracruz, the worst hit state, were unimpressed. The governor dares to say nothing happened, that the river slightly overflowed. And you can see here in the images that it's not true. There are people from outside who have come to support us and we call on more people to come and help us, even for a little while, because it's going to take a long time for Poza Rica to recover. President Claudia Sheinbaum herself was heckled when she went to the town on a tour of the affected regions. In her daily press conference on Monday, she said she understood the frustration and that the government has a long-term plan to bring help. Obviously, when someone's home is filled with mud, there's a deep sense of desperation and the family's hands alone aren't enough to clean it up. A lot of government support is needed. And that's exactly what we're doing today, helping with this clean-up. Based on our assessment, there'll be an initial round of assistance followed by further support.
