These changes will prevent teens from viewing or searching for more mature topics, following adult-oriented accounts, and will also extend to Instagram's AI chatbot.

The move comes as several states have enacted laws restricting underage use of social media, and is consistent with similar actions by other platforms such as TikTok and Snapchat, which have expanded parental controls and safety resources. Meta's approach includes using AI to detect users who may misrepresent their age, with the goal of ensuring that content restrictions are applied appropriately.

At least 10 states have passed laws restricting underage use of social media. Joining me now is Rhys Rogers, staff writer at Wired Magazine. Rhys, thanks a lot for joining us. So what exactly is Instagram changing? Thank you for having me. Yes, so Instagram is trying to identify all users under the age of 18 and then restrict the content on the platform for those users to something that's comparable with what you would see in a PG-13 rated movie. With these new restrictions in place, teens won't be able to see videos and photos that might have more mature content. They'll also no longer be able to search for topics like gore and teens won't be able to follow accounts that frequently post more adult-oriented material. These changes also expand to their AI chatbot inside of Instagram, where similar restrictions for teens will be rolling out. Rhys, how will Meta do this and how easy will it be to get around? So Meta is focusing on their AI technology to identify teenage users. So even if a user says that they are over the age of 18, if Meta will be looking for patterns using AI that might show that they would be lying about their age and then filter them within the teenage bracket with these restrictions. Though, based on teenagers and their tenacity for trying to get around tools like this, I suspect that users under the age of 18 will definitely be pushing this to limits and testing to see how they can get around what Meta is trying to put in place here. And Rhys, where does this fit in terms of what other companies are doing to try to put up these kinds of restrictions? Yeah, this move from Meta for Instagram is very in line with the actions taken by other social media platforms in 2025, especially regarding teen safety and providing more parental controls. For example, TikTok and Snapchat have both expanded resources this year for parents who have more insights into what their teens are doing online. And the larger safety trend goes beyond just social media platforms. Roblox, a popular platform for playing video games and AI, the maker of Chachabiti, has also announced new features with different themes.
