Locals are split on Trump's plans for the city. I think it was a great idea. Memphis has gotten out of hand the last few years, and it's to a point now where we need all the help we can get. I think Trump is crazy, super crazy. He's trying to take over like a dictatorship. Republican Tennessee Senator Brent Taylor says he welcomes the president's help in dealing with what he says is a serious crime problem in Memphis. Well, I will tell you that I am happier than a fat man at the Golden Corral buffet that he is sending the National Guard to Memphis. This is something my constituents have been asking for for a long time. Crime has been at an unmanageable level for a number of years. Trump's decision has drawn sharp criticism from Democratic leaders and civil rights advocates, who say the move is more political theater than public safety strategy. That view is shared by Democratic Tennessee Senator Ramesh Akbari. You know, quite frankly, this is not something we've asked for. For me, this is more of a political stunt than one that's actually going to yield real impact. And unfortunately, I just hope that the people of Memphis do not suffer any unintended consequences because of it. With such federal deployments, the Trump administration is framing violent crime as a national emergency and attempting to characterize Democrats as weak on public safety. Trump has vowed to take similar actions soon in the city of Chicago and elsewhere.
