In tonight's In Depth, Ian Lee got rare access to the airbase which operates the bomber fleet. This is the plane that flew the 36-hour mission to Iran. I think in terms of my lifetime as an airman, this will be one of the most consequential raids that we've executed. Seven B-2 stealth bombers hit Iranian nuclear sites last June in Operation Midnight Hammer. What was going through your mind as your crews were flying? I will tell you the biggest moment of my career, not just as a commander, is when I knew our guys were safe. Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri is home to roughly 20 B-2 stealth bombers. Colonel Josh Whitla commands the 509th Bomb Wing. There's a lot of long-range aircraft out there. There's a lot of aircraft that have a high payload. There's also other stealth aircraft out there, but the only one that combines all three is the B-2. This is incredibly unique access. Few people get this close to a B-2. But still, there's a lot we can't show you because it's classified. Like certain design features that allow the B-2 to slip into enemy airspace invisible to radar. Stealth matters, and stealth matters even more today than it did at its inception. Why is there so much secrecy? And stealth is many things. It's shape. It's materials. It's tactics. And so we protect our stealthy capabilities in a way such that the advantages don't accumulate to anyone else. Major General Jason Armagost at Global Strike Command got the order from President Trump to carry out the strike on Iran. So my confidence was very high once we hit that tripwire. Those planes were going into airspace of the most advanced adversary that they've ever confronted. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. We also know, you know, they're not alone. Stealth F-22 and F-35 tactical fighters escorted the B-2s into Iranian airspace. The performance was perfect. And this is the 30,000-pound bomb. It's called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOB for short, and it's specifically designed to hit deep underground targets. Fourteen of those bunker busters were loaded by Chief Master Sergeant Frank Espinoza and his team for the mission to Iran. And they all made it happen flawlessly.
