A tobacconist on Como Parade in Mentone, Victoria, was the target of a firebombing just after 10:30 p.m., marking the third such attack on the business in six weeks. Two males were seen exiting a vehicle and starting the fire, resulting in substantial damage and the evacuation of occupants, with the premises possibly destroyed.

Nearby businesses, including a hairdresser, were also affected by the incident. Police are focusing on identifying two vehicles captured on CCTV and have appealed to the public for assistance. Authorities believe the attack was targeted but have not yet determined the motivation.

The tobacco turf war raging on in Melbourne. Just after 10.30 last night, a tobacconist on Como Parade in Mentone was targeted in yet another firebombing. It's just been going on. Firebombing, trying to break in. A vehicle was seen back into that premises. Two males alighting and causing that fire. Damage on this occasion is substantial. We've had to evacuate occupants. They've had to be relocated. We're getting it assessed from a surveyor at the moment, but it looks like that premises may be destroyed. Witnesses described the sound of the shop going up in flames. Like a bomb. Exactly like a bomb. One of the neighbouring businesses affected by the attack was a hairdressers that was fully booked with appointments. It was much worse than what I had anticipated. Yeah. So, um... Yeah, I was quite shocked, to be honest. We're all in shock. And it's a big surprise. Um, coming to work and not being able to trade. It's the third time the tobacconist has been targeted in just six weeks. Police say the firebug slid in a white SUV and was joined by another getaway car. The focus for detectives now is to track those two vehicles that were captured by CCTV. So, at this stage, we're looking for witnesses requesting assistance from the public to identify that particular car or vehicle. For reassurance of those community members and businesses, this was specific to a particular business and we're still yet to determine the motivations, clearly, but we're looking at it being a targeted attack.
