A massive fire has exploded in the area of the historic Chinese Camp in Central California, officials confirm. CBS News' Jonathan Vigliotti reports.

Firefighters in California are battling a significant wildfire in the Central Valley, sparked by a series of lightning strikes. The fire has burned nearly 14,000 acres and devastated the small town of Chinese Camp, destroying dozens of homes and much of the community.

More than 600 firefighters are working on the ground and in the air to contain the blaze, which is currently 15 percent contained. At least one injury has been reported, involving a bulldozer operator. The fire has moved into rural, rugged terrain, and officials are concerned that expected winds could reignite hot spots.

All right, fire crews in California are fighting a massive blaze in the Central Valley right now. Lightning strikes across the region sparked dozens of wildfires, now burning almost 14,000 acres. CBS News correspondent Jonathan Bigliotti is in a small town called Chinese Camp in northern California. Jonathan, good morning. Help us understand what the situation there looks and feels like right now. Yeah, Errol, we're here in what is left of historic downtown. You're looking at a landmark building behind me. It has been gutted. We arrived here yesterday to survey the damage. This is a community of about 100 people, and from what we've seen, most of this community has been destroyed. Easily dozens of homes, entire neighborhoods were leveled. This all started with a lightning strike on Tuesday after a powerful storm system blew in from Monday into Tuesday. At its peak, we're talking lightning strikes every few seconds, upwards of 16,000 bolts in just under 24 hours. As you can imagine, it's at fire crews scrambling, people here evacuating. More than 600 firefighters are here on the scene responding on the ground and in the air. Overnight, they did make significant progress in containment, 15 per cassette contained this morning, though officials are telling us there was at least one injury. A bulldozer operator flipped over while responding to one of the front lines. Shows just how dangerous those efforts can be, and Jonathan, with about 600 firefighters, what's the biggest challenge the crews are facing? I know the topography is quite vast and widespread, although not densely populated. That's correct, and right now the fire has retreated from populated areas. It is in more rural, rugged terrain, but 14,000 acres were burned. That's a lot of hot spots, and then you add wind to that. We're expecting more wind in the coming hours, and that runs the risk and the threat of kicking those flames back up, Errol.
