Mary Sheffield has been elected as the new mayor of Detroit, succeeding Mike Duggan after his decade-long tenure. Sheffield, who previously served as City Council president, becomes the city's first female mayor in its 324-year history, securing approximately 77% of the vote against Reverend Solomon Kinloch Jr.

Sheffield has pledged to focus on neighborhood development, reducing poverty and crime, and expanding opportunities for Detroit residents. Her opponent, Kinloch, conceded the race and expressed his intent to continue advocating for citywide improvements, particularly in affordable housing and public safety.

Robin Murdoch on the big win from last night. Robin. Good morning, J. And Erica. Yeah, very exciting time here in the city. A very historic time in the city Detroit for the first time in 12 years. We picked a very new mayor, and we also picked its first female mayor in 324 years. So the first time in the city's history, Mary Sheffield, City Council president and now Mayor elect Sheffield. She says that she is just honored by this. She is humbled by this and just trying to take it all in right now. Sheffield. She actually made history back in 2022 when she became the youngest City Council president ever. She got about 77% of the vote last night compared to her opponent, Reverend Solomon Kinloch Jr. Of the Triumph Church, who got about 23% of the vote in the mayoral election. Now, Sheffield has been a front runner since the very beginning, as you know, taking about 50% of the vote in August, and then her momentum just kept building. As the next mayor, Sheffield says that she will make sure the neighborhoods are not neglected. She wants to decrease poverty and crime while increasing opportunities for all Detroiters. She says that her experience will help lead the city and help it rise even higher. Take a listen to a part of her victory speech last night to every Detroiter that is watching tonight. Whether you voted for me or not, I am here to listen to you to fight for you and to serve you because at the end of the day, we all want the same thing, a Detroit that works for everyone. Now, Sheffield says that she will begin working on a transition team and they will start kind of coming up with ideas for what they want to accomplish in her 1st 100 days in office again. On the other side of the ballot, Reverend Solomon Kinloch Jr. Falling short of his opponent. That loss not stopping him from staying optimistic and thanking his supporters. Fox News Camilla Mary with this story. Yeah, this is not the outcome that everyone hoped for here at the Kinloch campaign. But nonetheless, this was a very energized crowd. Take a look at some video really throughout the whole night. It felt like a party. There were comedians, there was music, there was dancing, there was food trucks, there were just a very jovial atmosphere. Everybody just walking around with their T shirts talking about Kinloch. The women's T shirts said women for Kinloch were locked in and you really felt that there was one woman. She had a fan that said, you know that she was using the fan herself that said Kinloch. I mean, it was everywhere you look, there were so many people who were just so gung ho, really boots on the ground. He did take the stand about 9 40. He took the stage 9 40 p.m. To take basically make his concession speech never once mentioning Mary Sheffield, but really saying that he has no regrets and that he's looking forward to the future. Take a listen. I'm a still yell it from the rooftop that you cannot make all of the investments downtown. It has to reach the whole town of Detroit. I got in this race because they weren't talking about affordable housing. I got in this race because they weren't talking. They were celebrating crime. They were saying that crime is going down, but the people in the city still don't feel safe. I got in this race because the majority of the people in this city still wrestle with keeping a roof over their head. The election may be over, but the movement is still going on. Mhm. I want you to know that I'm still gonna be fighting and he did talk about the future and he does say that he wants to work with the new administration. He wants to see Detroit move forward. He wants to see the neighborhoods get the attention that downtown has gotten for so many years. Whether or not that happens, of course, time will tell Camille and Mary Fox two news.
