Football Australia’s eight-month global search for a new chief executive has ended, with former Stan boss Martin Kugeler appointed to lead the federation. Kugeler will step into the role on 16 February, succeeding James Johnson.

Kugler highlighted the importance of unity among football stakeholders and aims to strengthen both men's and women's A-League competitions. The appointments come as the Matildas prepare to host the Asian Cup and the Socceroos head to the World Cup. Heather Garriock has also been named director of football.

Martin brings a rare balance of systems level thinking, commercial and financial acumen, innovation, media insight and importantly a profound and deep understanding and passion for football. German born Martin Kugler was most recently chief executive of streaming platform Stan. He says the game must grow. Their revenue, their audience, their commercial line and that will enable us to invest back into the game and the more we invest back into the game the more grass root player we have the better our high performance teams are so it's a cycle. Like previous CEOs Kugler points out 1.9 million participants makes football the biggest sport in Australia but stops short of trying to dethrone the AFL and NRL. I probably don't necessarily always compare to others. People can watch or should watch and enjoy the sports that they love but football is just a sport that unites everyone. That will be the case as the Matildas host the Asian Cup and the Socceroos head to the World Cup, vital for attracting new fans. And to keep them Martin wants an A-League men's and women's competition that's humming. Football stakeholders fighting for the sport not amongst themselves.
