Investigators in Manhattan are examining a note left by Shane Tomorrow, the suspect in a recent Midtown shooting, which references chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and accuses the NFL of concealing the dangers of brain injuries. Tomorrow, who previously played high school football and worked as a security guard, had a valid concealed carry permit despite prior mental health incidents, including one where he allegedly expressed suicidal thoughts.

Authorities confirmed that Tomorrow assembled the weapon used in the attack with parts purchased by an associate, who is now being questioned. The four victims have been identified as Julia Hyman, Wesley LaPattner, Alanda Tien, and NYPD officer Deidreul Islam. The medical examiner will analyze Tomorrow's brain as part of the standard autopsy procedure, as CTE can only be diagnosed posthumously.

As investigators try to piece together how Monday's shooting in Midtown Manhattan unfolded, CBS News has obtained a note written by the gunman, 27-year-old Shane Tomorrow. It made several references to the brain condition chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, and said in part, study my brain, please. He appeared to blame the NFL saying, quote, the league knowingly concealed the dangers to our brains to maximize profits. They failed us. Growing up, Tomorrow played high school football in Southern California. Most recently, police say he worked an overnight security shift at the Horseshoe Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Public records reveal Tomorrow was licensed by Nevada's private investigators board and police confirmed he had a valid concealed carry permit. He later had at least two mental health incidents, including one where he allegedly told police he was suicidal, but his permit was not revoked. An AR-15 style assault rifle was assembled by Mr. Tomorrow using a lower receiver purchased by an associate. We have located that associate and others, and we'll be questioning him about that purchase. Meanwhile, all four victims killed have been identified. Julia Hyman, an associate with the real estate firm Rudin, Wesley LaPattner, a senior managing director with Blackstone, Alanda Tien, a security guard, and NYPD officer Deidreul Islam. He was a good man. He was a good brother. He was a good husband. He was a good son to his parents. He always showed up. Every time anyone needed any help, he was always there. In terms of the gunman's CTE concerns, we should note that disease cannot be diagnosed in living patients. We reached out to the medical examiner here in the city who said that his brain would be analyzed as part of the autopsy. The spokesperson said that is standard procedure.
