The Illinois man convicted of killing a 6-year-old Muslim boy in a 2023 hate crime has died, according to the Will County Sheriff's Office.

Joseph Zuba, who was convicted of killing 6-year-old Wadi Afuzami in a hate crime stabbing, has died while in custody, according to the Will County Sheriff's Office. Zuba, aged 73 at the time of his sentencing, had been given a 53-year prison term for the murder and for seriously injuring the boy's mother in the home they rented from him.

The attack occurred in 2023, shortly after Hamas attacked Israel. Authorities have not released details regarding the circumstances or cause of Zuba's death.
