A 48-year-old man behind a crime spree involving an imitation firearm has been denied bail, as the court heard he had been aggressive in hospital after his arrest.

A 48-year-old man, Simon Davies, appeared in court via video link after being accused of a series of offences in Melbourne, including multiple carjackings and a standoff in the CBD involving an imitation firearm. The court heard that Davies had been on bail for only two days prior to these incidents and had also been involved in aggressive behaviour at a hospital.

Police opposed bail, citing community risk and concerns about Davies' mental health and drug use. The magistrate refused bail, referencing the seriousness of the allegations, the amount of evidence, and the potential for a lengthy prison sentence if Davies is found guilty.

Ursula, we learned in court that Simon Davies is accused of seven separate episodes of offending between Monday and Tuesday. Many of those details revealed in court just a short time ago. The court this evening heard he was involved in another carjacking two days earlier, as well as becoming racist and aggressive towards staff at a hospital in the western suburbs, which involved smashing a wine bottle and threatening a security guard. He appeared in court via video link from the Royal Melbourne Hospital this evening, where he was handcuffed to his bed and made the application for bail after yesterday's alleged spree. The 48-year-old is accused of multiple carjackings across Melbourne's west before a dramatic standoff in the CBD, where he allegedly threatened people with what turned out to be an imitation firearm. Police opposed bail, alleging he would be a risk to the community and he has been using drugs to substitute medicine for mental health conditions. The defence argued he's vulnerable in custody due to his mental health, as well as injuries sustained during his arrest. Ursula Davies was refused bail, noting the amount of footage and witness statements and the lengthy prison sentence he faces if found guilty.
