Brown, who has a history of prior arrests, is currently undergoing court-ordered mental health evaluations and has not yet entered a plea. The case has prompted responses from both federal and state officials, emphasizing the need for stronger intervention and increased law enforcement resources.

Twenty-three-year-old Irina Zarutska fled the war in Ukraine to find a new home in North Carolina. Prosecutors say on August 22, on her way home from work, she was fatally stabbed three times while seated on the light rail system in Charlotte as surveillance cameras rolled. The FBI said the man who carried out the attack is DeCarlos Brown Jr., who they say was later seen walking off the train with a bloody knife. This is obviously a horrible, horrible situation. But this is why federal statutes exist. They exist to take care of situations like this. Brown already faces local charges, but on Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson of North Carolina announced a federal terror charge is being added, citing the scene of the crime, a mass transit system, raising the possibility of the death penalty. It's a terroristic act to make people afraid to go about their daily lives. That's what terrorism is. Court records show Brown has been arrested 14 times prior, including a 2015 conviction for robbery with a dangerous weapon. We have to respond with force and strength. President Trump leaned into the case Tuesday, posting on social media a repeat offender allegedly killing a young refugee justifies stronger federal intervention and deployments in Democratic-led cities. We cannot allow a depraved criminal element of violent repeat offenders to continue spreading destruction and death throughout our country. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, a Democrat who won the seat last year, posted about the case, saying, we need more cops on the beat to keep people safe, and that's why my budget calls for more funding to hire more well-trained police officers. Brown has not appeared in court to enter a plea on these federal charges. He is undergoing court-ordered mental health exams, Tony. Scott, thank you very much.
