This decision came just days after armed men killed the mayor of the rural town of Dogofry in the Ségou region.

Authorities in Mali's central Ségou region have extended a night-time curfew for an additional 30 days in response to a recent increase in violence, including the killing of the mayor of Dogothri and attacks by jihadist groups. The curfew, which has been in place since June, now runs from midnight to 5am, following incidents such as the attack on a military camp in Farabugu by the al-Qaeda-linked JNIM group, which resulted in the displacement of civilians and the withdrawal of the army.

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, the Ségou region recorded 323 security incidents and over 730 civilian victims in the first half of 2025. Other regions in southern Mali, such as Ghais and Sisakho, have also imposed curfews in response to ongoing insecurity.

The prolonged curfew took effect on September 3rd and runs to October 2nd between midnight and 5am. This decision came just days after armed men killed the mayor of the rural town of Dogothri on Saturday. Earlier in August, jihadists from the JNIM organisation also attacked a military camp in the town of Farabugu, forcing civilians to flee and the army to give up their positions. JNIM claims to have killed several soldiers and civilians but no official death toll has been released. Combatants from the al-Qaeda-linked group have since retained control over Farabugu. These attacks illustrate the ongoing security threats gripping Mali and the Sahel. In the first six months of 2025, the Segou region has recorded 323 security incidents. These events caused more than 730 civilian victims, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency. The Ghais and Sisakho regions in southern Mali have also established curfews in the last three months amid lasting insecurity.
