Face the Nation moderator and CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan spoke with Mr. Macron yesterday. One topic they discussed was, of course, the Middle East. Margaret joins us from Paris with the latest. Margaret, good to see you. Paris is my favorite city in the whole world. We're not here to talk about the beauty of Paris, but something much more serious. Good to see you. Well, President Macron will formally recognize the right of Palestinians to their own state. On Monday, France will join the more than 140 countries who already recognize Palestine, despite ongoing disputes with Israel over the borders of a future state. Now, this puts France in direct conflict with the Trump administration. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this is a reckless decision. That's the word he used. He said it gives Hamas little incentive to actually start diplomacy to release the hostages. Why do you disagree with that sequencing? I think probably this is an excessive word and I disagree with this approach. Why? Because the objective of Hamas is absolutely not to create a Palestinian state. The objective of Hamas is to destroy Israel, to convince a maximum number of people that they have no chance to have peace and stability and precisely a Palestinian state. And to kill the maximum number of Israeli people. And this is why. If we want to stop this war, if we want to isolate Hamas, the recognition process and the peace plan which goes with this recognition process is a precondition. So my first point is to say I don't answer the Hamas with that. I don't meet the expectations of Hamas. Hamas is just obsessed by destroying Israel. But I recognize the legitimacy of so many Palestinian people who want a state, who are a people. They want a nation. They want a state. And we should not push them towards Hamas. Margaret, before you go, help us understand why this decision is so significant. Well, Gayle, it's the latest sign that Israel is becoming increasingly isolated from the rest of the world. The U.K., Canada, Australia, they're all following France's lead here. Now this doesn't practically change everyday life for Palestinians, but it does revive international efforts to try to prop up an alternative to Hamas. The Trump administration, however, has blocked Palestinian authority officials from entering the U.S.
