The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved a motion that could lead to a ban on federal immigration agents wearing masks while operating in parts of the county. The proposal, which will be drafted into a formal rule by county attorneys, aims to ensure transparency and address concerns about public safety, particularly the risk of criminals impersonating law enforcement officers. 

Supporters of the measure, including Supervisor Janice Hahn, cite recent incidents of individuals impersonating ICE agents as a key motivation. However, federal officials, including Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, argue that masks are sometimes necessary to protect agents and their families. Legal experts suggest that any local or state law requiring ICE agents to be unmasked is unlikely to withstand court challenges. The White House has defended the use of masks by ICE agents, attributing attempts to restrict them to political opposition.

Local governments in states opposed to the President's immigration policies are resisting the aggressive tactics used by ICE during immigration raids, especially the use of masks to hide agents' identities. Now, as CBS' Adam Yamaguchi reports, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is taking action, moving to ban face coverings altogether. The L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved a motion that could eventually prevent federal agents from wearing masks in parts of the county. It now goes to county attorneys to draft up a rule to be voted on. If you're going to come into L.A. County and interact with our public, they have a right to know who you are. Supervisor Janice Hahn spearheaded the effort. One of her biggest concerns, public safety. We're having problems with imposters. So if everybody is wearing a mask, we do have criminals who are out there who could dress up as agents. CBS News has confirmed at least a dozen people have been arrested across the U.S. for impersonating immigration and customs enforcement agents in the last few months. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons recently addressed the mask controversy with his own safety concerns when CBS' Faced the Nation. I'm not a proponent of the masks. However, if that's a tool that the men and women of ICE to keep themselves and their families safe, then I'll allow it. If we had those laws or regulations in place to give ICE agents and officers and other law enforcement officers the peace of mind that someone that does threaten their life or their families or doxxes them will be held accountable, I think that'd go a long way. Bans on federal agents masking their identities will likely have to be fought in court. UC Davis Professor Kevin Johnson specializes in immigration law. It's going to be very unlikely that any kind of court will uphold a state or local law saying that ICE have to be unmasked. Han remains undeterred. You know, it'll be a lawsuit. So we'll probably get sued over it, but I say see you in court. L.A. County is not alone. There are a number of other cities, states and congressional districts who are taking up this issue. Now, in a statement to CBS News, the White House said ICE agents require these masks to protect themselves and blame Democrats for attempting to undermine their officers. John.
