Lorena is now a hurricane and is on track to bring tropical moisture to parts of the Desert Southwest. Rain chances will increase later this week into the weekend across parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Hurricane Lorena, currently classified as a Category 1 storm with winds of 75 miles per hour, is moving north and is expected to impact New Mexico and parts of southern Arizona. The storm is anticipated to bring significant rainfall to areas suffering from exceptional drought, particularly between New Mexico and Arizona.

While the precipitation is much needed, experts warn that the extremely dry and compacted ground could lead to rapid runoff and potential flooding, even with only a few inches of rain. Authorities have issued a flood outlook for several days, highlighting the risk of catastrophic flooding in the affected desert regions.

So we've obviously had some of the monsoon kick in the last couple of days, which has been fantastic. Could we get help from Lorena this morning? It was a hurricane moving north again. The overall path is questionable, but I'm hoping the moisture comes through and gives us much-needed precipitation. The thing is, it's a slider. I call these sliders. So this one's going to kind of slide across New Mexico and out into the Plain States. So this is going to impact multiple locations. Versus come up, into the deeper parts of the West. But it will impact a lot of locations. New Mexico's going to get this. Maybe too much of a good thing. And we're going to talk about that in a second. You're going to see it. So 75 mile an hour, Cat 1 now. Still constricted a little bit. And then there's your turn as it heads east. So we're talking southern Arizona, maybe Phoenix, due south. But you know what's interesting? When we take a look at the overall path of this thing and where it goes, as you mentioned, this slider sliding this moisture up an area. We actually need so much help right here in between New Mexico and Arizona with the drought. Yeah, but the other thing too is it's so dry. It's like cement. So when it starts to fall, it's just going to wash everywhere. That's true. Even a couple of inches as forecasted here could be a huge problem for the desert. Like you mentioned, one of the worst areas. There's the exceptional drought. This whole area down through here. So it's kind of a good location of where it's going. But the problem is we know there's going to be catastrophic flooding potential, even if you get a couple of inches, which is why we have that flood outlook for several days.
