AccuWeather Long-Range Expert Joe Lundberg discusses next week's forecast.

Meteorologists at AccuWeather are predicting a cool start to next week across much of the United States, particularly in the Ohio Valley and Northeast, where nighttime lows are expected to be well below historical averages. The dry weather pattern is anticipated to persist, with high pressure systems leading to several consecutive days without rain in regions stretching from St. Louis to Buffalo and Pittsburgh.

While the western US may experience a break from the heat, this could be accompanied by spotty showers and thunderstorms, potentially increasing fire risk. Tropical downpours are possible in the Florida peninsula, and a developing tropical wave in the Atlantic is expected to become a hurricane, though no impacts on the US coastline are forecast for next week. Drought conditions are expected to continue or worsen in parts of the lower Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, and Northeast.

Looking ahead next week

Lots to talk about in the long range for next week. With that, let's get to it. The crystal ball meteorologist Joe Lumberg. I just said we're running low on time, but Joe, I have to say it, happy anniversary to you and I. Thirty five years ago, you were a student at Penn State getting working on your master's. I was getting my undergrads. We both came to AccuWeather on this day 35 years ago. So happy anniversary. September 4th, 1990. How about it? I would have thought 35 years later you and I would be working together on TV, but it's been an honor and privilege to work with you for the last 35 years. Likewise. Likewise. All right. What did we talk about last week? Well, chill. Take a listen. Joe, let's talk about that cool. I know you and the long range team meteorologist Paul Paslock are pretty impressed with this cool shot. Oh, my goodness. I mean, you know, you just look at how far below average it has been this week. Historical averages, I mean, typically should still be in the 50s for nighttime lows. We've seen 40s, even some 30s. This shot, I think, is even more impressive. So Wednesday night, you're going to see a lot of places in here with nighttime lows in the 40s, daytime highs, some 10 to 20 below these historical averages. That's going to sweep eastward on Thursday and eventually will cross over the Appalachians as we get to next weekend. You got the intensity right and even the timing as it's pushing into the northeast today. All right, Joe, let's get up and go. All right. This is for next week. It's going to stay largely dry across the Ohio Valley into the northeast for most of the week. It will start cool, but it will warm up with time, especially in the plain. Pretty quickly. There could be some tropical downpours across the Florida peninsula and you're going to get a break from the heat in the west, but it may come at a price for some shower and thunderstorm activity, which may be spotty and could cause some more fires. Here's the U.S. drought monitor. This will be updated in the next hour or so. Notice we get more and more of these areas now from the lower Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley and northeast that are seeing abnormally dry conditions to drought conditions extending. And if you look at the pattern for next week, it's not promising. Yeah, I know most was talking about a front coming into the east to bring some much needed rain for these areas. But after Saturday night, that's gone. This trough comes in and means a cool start to next week as the ridge develops in the plain states. It's going to warm up and we're going to see a big area of high pressure develop over these areas. And what does that mean? That means dry weather, no rain. That's also going to lead to some cool nights. You're going to see some warming trends from west to east with time. But underneath this high, it's a stable air mass. And at this time of the year, these things tend to hang around for days at a time. And as a result of that, I think you're going to have five, six days of dry weather from, say, St. Louis all the way up to maybe Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Joe, I'm working on a masterpiece for our next hit. In fact, I'll have it here probably in about a half hour. Really quickly, this tropical wave, I think there could be some anxious moments here. There could be. I mean, this has got some good things going for it if you look for development, if you will. And eventually, we do believe that this is going to become a hurricane at some point over the course of the weekend or early next week. It'll approach the islands by the middle of next week. And through next week, we don't expect any impacts on the U.S. coastline. But after that, big question mark. All bets are off.
