It takes you behind the scenes of Sarah McLachlan's legendary all-women music festival, one that launched the careers of iconic artists like Missy Elliott, Christina Aguilera, and Nelly Furtado. CBC's Magda Gabrusolasi was on the red carpet and took it all in. Lilith Fair was the music festival that at the time many said could not happen. This was a festival with an all-female lineup with Sarah McLachlan leading the way. You had artists coming from across generations representing various genres taking part at the time. Everyone from Tracey Chapman to Jewel, Joan Osborne, Erykah Badu. The festival ran from 1997 to 1999 and at the time it got plenty of pushback. Here's a bit from the documentary. Promoters said you can't put two women on the same bill people won't come. That's complete bull. And it put a huge fire under my butt to prove them wrong. Now we caught up with Sarah McLachlan on the red carpet for the screening. Here's what she said about the emotional toll of that time. It was sort of a world of extremes like we were having the time of our lives. It was incredible and exhilarating and amazing but every day at the press conference I had to defend every piece of it from one side or another. You're too feminist. You're not feminist enough. You're not diverse enough. Why do you hate men? That was a real common sentiment and I was like what in the world is celebrating women have to do with hating men. As you would expect the festival had a huge female fan base but men and boys were coming out to these shows as well including a very young Dan Levy. He talked about how Lilith Fair was really a safe space for him and now he's a producer on this documentary. I was like a closeted kid going and seeing so many different types of people living so joyfully and outwardly. It really was a celebration of inclusivity across the board.
